Reflections: A Brief History of Looking At Ourselves is an exhibition of historic photographic portraiture that pulls from the archives of Maryland Historical Society, and includes three centuries of photographic artifacts, from daguerreotypes, salt prints, glass negatives, and silver gelatin, to contemporary digital images. 2019 marked the 180th anniversary of photography as an invention.  Reflections covers three approaches to portraiture:  expression of a sense of belonging, performance for the camera – human behavior when a camera is present, and the sense of gaze – awareness of being looked at, and looking back at the viewer.  In addition, the curators Joe Tropea and Elena Volkova aimed to examine the tri-fold relationship that exists between the subject of the image, the photographer, and the viewer.  The exhibition examines the way portraiture has progressed over the years, and the way self-representation has evolved.  Reflections was open to the public from June 2019 to July 2020.
